GUEST POST by EVIE HAMPTON

Settled in the East of France, Evie spends her time between a day job she loves and the noisy cat she serves and adores.

An avid stitcher and a curious nerd, Evie relaxes by stabbing fabrics while watching documentaries, listening to nonfiction audiobooks and true crime podcasts, or by daydreaming about the characters in her head.

She fell in love with queer romances after discovering her own sexuality while living in San Francisco. She quickly got hooked on them and it changed her life. She loves to write about LGBTQ+ folks finding their person(s), discovering themselves, and reaching their happily ever after.

The best way to keep up with her work is to follow her newsletter or her social media.

I don’t strictly plot. I wish I could. I love seeing all those pretty outlines some authors come up with. It looks so organized and pretty. There are bullet points and colors and sometimes they even have pictures and playlists.

But I can’t do that. I have to keep it all in my head. You want to know why? One, I can’t write to music, so playlists are out. But mostly, it’s because my characters always, always, derail the plot. And I don’t mean they change a scene or a piece of dialogue I had in mind. No, no, they sometimes change the whole storyline I had planned.

Exhibit A: My story Under the Stars from the Naughty by Nature anthology.

It’s about Tyler and Oakley, who meet at a club and have a torrid encounter. I can’t reveal more than that, as I don’t want to spoil anything for you! But what I can tell you, is that what ended up being a meet cute was supposed to be something entirely different.

You see, Tyler was supposed to be married to Terry. They were supposed to own a silviculture business together and a cabin in the forest nearby. They were supposed to interview a new employee the next day, that would have been Oakley whom Tyler had met the night before, and it should have ended in a threesome in a forest.

What happened instead? Well, I did write the scene in which Tyler sees Oakley at the club and his husband tells him to go take his chance with him. Have a fun night. It was all going smoothly until I came to the scene in which Oakley was supposed to meet his new bosses. And Oakley said, “What, what? Nuh-uh, that’s not gonna work.”

And Tyler said “Wait, Terry isn’t my husband. He’s my roommate!”

And Terry… Terry didn’t say anything. He didn’t want to be part of that story.

Before I knew it, my carefully thought-out story had a totally new plot with two single men finding each other, no threesome (sorry, but if you read the story I can promise you it’s still very steamy out there under the stars) and, gasp, a backstory. And an extra little add-on. And potentially a follow-up because now that these two had their chance to talk to me, they won’t shut up anymore.

So, that’s why I don’t plot “on paper.” Because frankly it would be a waste of my time, even if I love pretty spreadsheets with lots of colors. But I also can’t complain, because to be honest, when my characters start derailing my story it means I’m going in the right direction. It means I get them, they’re coming alive under my fingers, and it is so much fun. It’s what makes writing something I love to do. That moment the story comes alive and I discover it with each new word, when I surprise myself with what my imagination comes up with and the ideas flow, it’s like magic. And it’s quite addictive.

THANK YOU.
